In a culture that celebrates resilience, productivity, and “bouncing back,” we’re often encouraged to move on quickly, leave the past behind and focus on what’s next.
Real-life transitions rarely work that way.
They are nonlinear, personal, and often messy. Whether you’re navigating a job change, the end of a relationship, a health diagnosis, relocation, retirement, or a quieter internal shift, the in-between can feel uncertain and disorienting.
Research shows that when we take time to honor what’s ending, we move forward with greater clarity and resilience. Reflection, journaling, meaningful conversations, or simple rituals help us acknowledge what mattered, so we’re not carrying it unconsciously into what comes next.
While our culture pushes for quick solutions, those who allow themselves to sit with uncertainty often emerge with a renewed sense of identity and purpose. The in-between isn’t just about letting go; it’s about making room for new possibilities to take shape.
This understanding didn’t come easily to me.
Frequent relocations shaped a “just move on” mindset, and I became skilled at starting over without pausing to honor what, or who, I was leaving behind.
Years later, another move stopped me in my tracks. I could no longer move forward without looking back. What once felt devastating slowly revealed itself as a gift, an invitation to realign and live more intentionally. That work continues.
